Giant Strangler Fig

Giant Strangler Fig

Strangler figs are majestic trees, common in the rainforests and on the Bunya Mountains.  Strangler Figs are a parasitic species of tree that develop when the seed of a fig germinates on the top of another tree and then the tree tries to plant its roots in the ground by sending out aerial roots.  Aerial roots grow down from branches and take up nutrients and moisture from the air. Eventually the roots grow into the ground and thicken up and become what is commonly called ‘buttress’ roots. These strong aerial roots support the branches.

The Bunya Mountains Giant Strangler figs are plentiful and some are enormous in size.  The differing aerial root shapes are fascinating and provide inspiration for photographers and artists using other media such as textiles in this wallhanging. The birds featured in the wallhanging are the Paradise Rifle Birds, beautiful birds of the Bunyas.
