Kay Joyce: Goblin’s Playground
Remote rainforests evoke tales of magic and mystical beings, some whimsical, some good, some evil but all engaged in wondrous adventures. The ‘Strangler Fig’ might provide the ‘Goblins’ of this forest with a challenging climbing frame but its own story is somewhat more sinister.
Beginning life as an innocent seedling high in the canopy, its true character is soon revealed as it slowly entwines and ‘strangles’ the life force from its unwitting host. Eventually dominating and feeding on the last rotting remains of its once strong and thriving victim, the ‘Strangler Fig’ lives on to become an elder of its domain.
This elder plays its role providing a home for all manner of life. Animals and plants create a vibrant community among the intricately twisting roots, the trunk and the branches and leaves of the canopy: a mirror image of that of the forest.
